As the grandfather of three young ones, ages 5 to 9, I get to see my fair share of kid movies: plenty of hijinks, lots of bathroom humor, and an endless stream of slapstick gags. Yet even among the worst of the lot, there’s something to be learned, some message being conveyed, or some aspect of our reality being reflected in celluloid.

So it was that I found myself sitting through The Angry Birds Movie on a recent Sunday afternoon, doling out popcorn, candy and drinks and trying to make sense of a 90-minute movie based on a cell phone video game that has been downloaded more than 3 billion times.

The storyline is simple enough: an island nation of well-meaning, feel-good, flightless birds gets seduced by a charismatic green pig and his cohort who comes bearing food, wine and entertainment spectacles (the Roman equivalent of bread circuses). Ignoring the warnings of one solitary, suspicious “angry” bird that the pigs are up to no good, the clueless birds eventually discover that the pigs have stolen their most precious possessions: their eggs, the future of their entire society. It takes the “angry bird” to motivate the normally unflappable Bird Nation to get outraged enough to do something about the violation of their trust by the pigs and the theft of their personal property.

While one would be hard-pressed to call The Angry Birds Movie overly insightful, it is, as The Atlantic concludes, a “feather-light metaphor for our times… The film functions, effectively, as a fairy tale: It uses its status as fantasy to impart lessons about reality.”

Islamic State fighters captured territory from Syrian rebels near the Turkish border on Friday and inched closer to a town on a supply route for foreign-backed insurgents fighting the jihadists, a monitoring group said. 

The hardline group has been fighting against rebels in the area for several months. The rebels, who are supplied via Turkey, last month staged a major push against Islamic State, but the group counter-attacked and beat them back.

Last year criminal groups earned up to 6 billion dollars on the trafficking of those poor souls referred to as migrants. This revelation was made last January by the direction of Europol’s Rob Wainwright in his interview with The Independent. He has confirmed that illegal human trafficking can now contest illegal drug trade in terms of overall income that criminal syndicates are getting from it.

A joint report that has recently been published by Interpol and Europol notes that human traffickers made $6 billion from the wave of migration into southern Europe last year. Nine out of ten migrants and refugees entering the European Union in 2015 relied on “facilitation services,” mainly loose networks of criminals along the routes, and the proportion was likely to be even higher this year, the report said. About 1 million migrants entered the EU in 2015. Most paid 3,000-6,000 euros, so the average turnover was likely between 5 billion dollars and 6 billion dollars.

The main organisers came from the same countries as the migrants, but often had EU residence permits or passports. The basic structure of migrant smuggling networks includes leaders who coordinate activities along a given route, organisers who manage activities locally through personal contacts, and opportunistic low-level facilitators who mostly assist organisers and may assist in recruitment activities.

The whole world is divided into “areas of responsibility” each entrusted to one of the “six US unified combatant commands”: 

• the North Command covering North America;
• the South Command covering South America;
• the European Command covering the region comprising Europe and Russia;
• the African Command covering the African continent;
• the Central Command covering Central Asia and the Middle East; and
• the Pacific Command covering the Asia Pacific Region.

In addition to the six geographic commands are three centres [responsible] for operations anywhere in the world: 

• the Strategic Command in charge of nuclear forces;
• the Command for Special Operations; and
• the Command for Transport.

Heading the European Command is a general or admiral appointed by the US President. This general/admiral automatically assumes the office of the Supreme Allied Commander in Europe.

Nato is therefore slotted into the Pentagon’s chain of command. Thus it forms an essential part of the US strategy. This means eliminating any State or political or social movement that threatens the US’s political, economic and military interests. For the US, while still the biggest world power, is losing ground faced with the emergence of new state and social actors.
