Elon Musk left OpenAI in 2018 with plans to start his own version of artificial intelligence, but he appeared to have done nothing in this area for several years. During that time, OpenAI formed their for-profit arm and continued to focus quietly on research, until in November of 2022 they released ChatGPT, which more or less took the world by storm.
Musk was now finally prompted to action, both offensive and defensive. His xAI was incorporated in March, 2023 in Nevada, with Elon Musk listed as its sole director.[1] But only weeks later, on March 22, 2023, Musk published the “open letter” calling for a moratorium in the development of AI in order to “develop new safety standards” for the technology. This was clearly an offensive move because the “pause” that Musk called for, applied only to his competitors. He was simply hoping to gather public support, based primarily on fear, in a move to shut down all his competitors while offering him a chance to catch up.

On July 12, 2023, Musk officially unveiled xAI and its initial staff members, most of whom he poached from Google, DeepMind and OpenAI. The team consisted primarily of former researchers at OpenAI, DeepMind, Google, Microsoft, Tesla and the University of Toronto.
As an article in The Street noted, [2] “But in the same month (July) observers were already questioning all the fundamentals of Musk’s claims.” The article stated that Musk positioned his xAI as a rival to ChatGPT and Google, but that there were “a few fundamental problems” with his approach. “Just as Musk is no astrophysicist when it comes to questions about space, he is likewise not an expert when it comes to artificial intelligence.“ The arguments were against Musk’s claims of building not only a “safe” AI model, but a “curious and truth-seeking” model whose goal would be “to understand the true nature of the universe.” Elon Musk’s claims were of course preposterous, as all experts have noted. A chatbot cannot be “curious” in any sense in which we understand the meaning of that word, and the “truth-seeking” element has already been proven to be manipulative nonsense. And of course, the proposed ability of an AI “to understand the true nature of the universe” is just another Musk hallucination, not even qualifying as a fantasy.
Elon Musk now entered a prolonged period of both astonishingly defensive moves as well as astonishingly offensive ones. Musk’s first version of an AI, Grok-1, was introduced in November 2023 following just two months of training [3]. Immediately after this, Musk began his intense assault on OpenAI and particularly on Sam Altman since, in November of 2023, Musk had already engineered the stillborn firing of Altman and the dismissal of Brockman. At around the same time, Musk sued to block the partnership between OpenAI and Microsoft, hoping to kill what he termed a vile and dangerous “closed-source” AI while he was busy building his own vile and dangerous closed-source xAI. It was all vindictive smoke and mirrors, underpinned by a false altruism erected on a scaffolding of manipulation and fraud.
On the defensive side, Musk apparently felt obsessed to produce an AI product that could be seen as superior to all his other competitors, this to be accomplished in two ways: (1) an overwhelming emphasis on raw computing power – which DeepSeek would soon prove unnecessary, and (2) the extensive use of flawed, corrupted, and largely useless training data from Twitter (X) combined with synthetic data. There were manifold advantages to the choice of substandard data. First, Twitter was a firehose of freely-accessible data and came without cost. Musk lacked the legal and contractual permissions to use the higher-quality data from media and other sources, so he simply improvised with whatever was available. The synthetic data were likewise free, and had the added advantage of being susceptible to unlimited manipulation.
In what could be considered only a “competitive fit of anxiety”, Musk invested $3-4 billion in compute resources. He began with 24,000 H100 GPUs then, by July 2024, apparently built a 100,000 H100 “Colossus” cluster. [4] This enormous computing capacity can partly explain the speed of Grok’s development. However, all media reports indicated then (and still indicate in July 2025) that Musk’s version of AI and his Grok were (and still are) vastly inferior to the products of DeepSeek, OpenAI, Anthropic’s Claude, and similar. The reason is that Musk’s decision to cut corners on data, produced an AI that was poorly-trained, badly-flawed, and generally substandard even though it occasionally functioned acceptably in select circumstances.
I will digress here for a moment to discuss the financial aspects of this venture.
Funding and Valuation
There is much conflicting information about xAI’s valuation. Musk was promoting figures of between $15-20 billion in early 2024 [5] after obtaining only $6 billion in funding, then, after a second $6 billion funding round in late 2024, claimed it reached $400-500 billion. Such rapid valuation jumps without proportional revenue growth suggest Elon Musk’s over-active imagination has been excessively over-active, especially since Grok reported only $100 million in annual revenue. If Elon Musk was right, I would pay a lot of money to learn how to convert $6 into $500 by doing nothing except putting it into my pocket.
This is not complicated. Musk formed an empty company and purchased a large swath of GPUs. So far, only expense; no income. Corporate value: only that of a building containing thousands of used computer chips. He then obtained two rounds of $6 billion in investor funding. So far, only expense, some cash in the bank, but still no income. Corporate value: $12 billion plus a building containing thousands of used computer chips. The source of the $500 billion valuation? Elon Musk’s fraudulent character and preposterous imagination, brought to you by dishonest media moguls promoting “the world’s greatest inventor”.
Also, the $33 billion valuation Musk assigned to Twitter/X during the xAI merger, seems not only questionable but preposterous considering the user and advertiser exodus. Post-acquisition, Twitter lost 50% of its top advertisers and 15% of users, with revenue collapsing. [6] The Wall Street Journal wrote that after Musk’s purchase, Twitter was “hemorrhaging users and advertisers”, with the Journal and other observers estimating its value at $10 billion or even less. [7][8]
Elon Musk’s ownership share of xAI was severely diminished.
The folding of Twitter-on-life-support (X) into xAI was a matter of necessity. Given the collapse in value, the merger with xAI was the only solution available to hide the emerging truth from investors and the public, but the move had significant implications for existing Twitter investors. The merger directly tied their financial interests in the failing Twitter to the hoped-for success and growth of xAI. The announcement was that former Twitter investors would convert their Twitter shares into a 25% ownership stake in Musk’s xAI. [9] One result is that Elon Musk’s ownership share of xAI was severely diminished. The former Twitter investors have taken 25% and the 15 or more investors who provided the $12 billion mentioned above, would have taken most of the rest of the equity. I don’t know Elon Musk’s share of xAI, but it could be as little as 10%.
In May of 2024, Musk claimed a $180B valuation (effectively rising from zero) after raising only $6B, despite minimal revenue. By December 2024, the valuation surged to $500B after another $6B raise, citing partnerships with NVIDIA and AMD. The reality check is that there are no audited financials to support this massive increase. Some analysts promoted the idea that the valuation relied on “strategic partnerships” (e.g., NVIDIA supplying GPUs) rather than commercial traction. But such a partnership merely reflects the availability of computing resources, and even if those are given gratis as an investment, their only current value is the cost of those chips. What happened was that Musk convinced graphics companies (as investors) to contribute computing power instead of cash, valuing GPU access at vastly inflated rates.
Musk’s narrative control affects perceptions. By promoting Grok as “scary-intelligent” and making bold claims about future capabilities, he generates hype that will inflate valuations far beyond current fundamentals. The timing is also suspicious – massive valuation leaps occurred amid Musk’s legal battles with OpenAI and the SEC, suggesting Musk’s typical and well-known distraction tactics. The truth is that xAI and X valuations appear totally disconnected from traditional metrics, heavily influenced by Musk’s promotion rather than organic growth or profitability. And, as with most of Musk’s claims, independent verification is absent.
The commonly-stated combined value of xAI and Twitter derive primarily from Elon Musk’s imagination. There are no definitive estimates of its real value and, so far as I am aware, there is no trusted authority to tell us that the value of xAI is even as much as the $80 billion to $120 billion commonly quoted by Musk skeptics. All of the valuations could be considered criminal fraud. If nothing else, the excessive hype and promotion would certainly affect the opinions of current and potential investors, stoking the false belief that a few billion invested in Musk’s enterprise would magically multiply by 100.
Back to Grok
Musk uses the world as human test cases for his beta experiments.
There were (and still are) many serious quality issues with Musk’s AI and Grok. Even the latest version of Grok-3 raised alarming medical concerns as well as displaying multiple other flaws. [10] It seems clear from the results that Musk grossly underestimated the technical requirements (again, a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing), but also flags once again Elon Musk’s juvenile and reckless “test-fly-crash” philosophy of pushing a product onto the market long before it is ready. As noted earlier in this series, and will be repeatedly noted later, Musk uses the world as human test cases for his beta experiments. We saw this with SpaceX’s rockets exploding, with Tesla’s self-drive being dangerously (and fatally) flawed, with Neuralink’s premature tests causing untold suffering, and much more. All the explosions, environmental damage, the auto accidents and deaths, the animal suffering, are merely collateral damage, the price of progress. It seems to me that, as with almost everything else, Musk pushed Grok out into the world long “before it was ready to fly”.
Musk formed xAI in March of 2023, and by March of 2024 he had not only his own Large Language Model (LLM), but he released his first chatbot Grok-1, with Grok-2 coming, and Grok-3 released in February of 2025. The other AI firms like Google, OpenAI, Anthropic, needed many years to develop their LLM and chatbots, but Musk seems to have accomplished all this in only months for his first attempt and only one year for what was presented as a “scarily intelligent” final work. That should have been impossible and, as noted above, the massive compute resources account for only part of this rapid development. The rest is in the cheap, free, but vastly inferior data Musk used in the training, in the cutting of corners, and in the premature deployment of a partially-finished and poorly-trained product.
There are ethics involved too. The probes under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulations, and Musk’s obvious medical overreach suggest not innovation or achievement but reckless deployment. And throwing 100,000 GPUs at a problem doesn’t guarantee breakthroughs or success. Other AI developers faced significant delays as scaling gains diminished [11]. Grok’s ongoing inferiority proves that in AI, compute without a coherent strategy breeds not Homo Sapiens but a crude and deformed Homo Neanderthal. Musk’s Colossus cluster may yet shift this balance, but as of mid-2025, xAI remains a contender playing catch-up. Elon Musk’s competitively-fueled rushed releases exposed serious quality issues.
It is also true that (1) Architectural differences matter greatly, (2) Training data quality and alignment are crucial, (3) Parameter counts don’t equate to quality or capability. We have efficiency vs scale: Smaller models like DeepSeek-R1 can be highly optimised for reasoning and factual accuracy, even with fewer parameters but an enormous model with massive compute resources (like Musk’s Grok and his Colossus), if trained poorly or trained on poor data, will still underperform a well-trained model like DeepSeek or ChatGPT. Models like Grok will typically hallucinate far more often and are generally less reliable than dense models like DeepSeek that use all parameters and tend to produce accurate, consistent, and predictable results. Just so it doesn’t go unsaid, “hallucinations” are of two kinds: (1) false information, data, and even quoted references that are totally fabricated by the AI out of thin air and, (2) outright lies that the chatbots are programmed to tell, but where the owners call them “hallucinations” if caught in the lies. I have a strong suspicion that (2) is more common than (1).
The Data and Training Issues
“AI researchers build large language models (LLMs) like those that power ChatGPT and Claude by feeding billions of words into a neural network. During training, the AI system processes the text repeatedly, building statistical relationships between words and concepts in the process. The quality of training data fed into the neural network directly impacts the resulting AI model’s capabilities. Models trained on well-edited books and articles tend to produce more coherent, accurate responses than those trained on lower-quality text like random YouTube [or Twitter] comments.” To give you a comparison, Anthropic spent millions of dollars physically scanning print books to build Claude. The company hired Tom Turvey from Google Books’ book-scanning project, and tasked him with obtaining “all the books in the world”. [12]
Elon Musk’s xAI and Grok trained mostly on the content of Twitter (X), but Twitter’s content is poor sentence structure, poor grammar, bad English, street slang, obscenities, and a flood of sociopathic nonsense. It is very low-level compared to the content of the major media, magazines, and books that are written at a much higher level of language. This data quality will of course be reflected in Grok’s output, thus by definition making it less useful, less reliable, and less desirable than other models. Twitter/X content will of necessity create an inferior AI. Training an AI on messy social media data, then expecting it to “understand the universe”, presents a few challenges.
Twitter’s linguistic characteristics of only 33 characters in English, high rates of abbreviations, emojis, and non-standard grammar, is not exactly perfection. It may be true that Grok might excel at replicating the “vibe” of online conversations, but that is a very small part of the valuable applications of AI. When Grok tries to produce anything academic or professional, it sounds like an internet troll trying to write a research paper. It can’t be a surprise that training data fundamentally shapes an AI’s voice and capabilities. Even Musk admits Grok needs work on coherence.
Elon Musk’s Twitter-centric training for Grok is both a strategic gamble and a fundamental limitation. Compared to DeepSeek or ChatGPT, Grok’s linguistic degradation is staggering. Nearly half of Twitter content consists of grammatical errors, slang, and obscenities (Stanford NLP Lab, 2024), and Grok’s outputs mirror this. Further, the low level of Twitter data produces what observers have termed “factual fragility”, meaning among other things that Grok has a 62% higher hallucination rate than do other models trained on academic texts (AI Benchmark Consortium). Further from the nature of Twitter’s truncated tweets (30 or so characters) Grok struggles mightily with logical chains of reasoning of 3 steps or more, and especially ethical reasoning. As one typical example of output, where GPT-4 says “This concept lacks substantive innovation”, Musk’s Grok says, “TBH, this idea is mid”. I have serious doubts that a construction like this could even follow directions on how to make a pizza, much less “understand the universe”.
Elon Musk did not choose Twitter for his primary AI data reserve because it was good or optimal or high quality. He chose it because Twitter is a literal firehose of data that was free, was immediate, and was exclusive to his xAI. He lacked OpenAI’s licensed book and music datasets or Google’s YouTube transcripts, and was in a rush to attack his competitors so he selected whatever was available. As you would expect, the results are poor by almost every human measure (ignoring benchmarks, and instead examining real-life human utility). Grok’s grammar accuracy is much lower than all other AIs, its “factual consistency” is only little over half of DeepSeek, ChatGPT or Claude (Source: Mozilla AI Benchmark Suite – Jan 2025), its tone appropriateness ranges from volatile to obscene, it cannot detect nuances or sarcasm, and contextual subtlety typically fails. Moreover, while Grok might excel at detecting Twitter memes, it misinterprets news items more than 40% of the time. Grok’s understanding of many things is surprisingly shallow, accurately reflecting the character of its creator.
You may think I’m being too harsh on Twitter and Grok, but consider the circumstances: we are not designing a video game here; this is a model of so-called “Artificial Intelligence” that, like it or not, is poised to reshape our world and will become embedded into the lives of nearly everyone. If we don’t strive for flawlessness here, what will happen to the minds of people in one or two generations? Do you want all your grandchildren to be Twitter-bots, knowing only memes and emojis, speaking only obscenities in bad English?
Someone wrote that “For viral roasts and partisan combat, Grok has its niche”. Others have said that Grok can have a more “human-sounding” conversation than other AI models. But items like viral roasts or partisan arguing are hardly the point of AI. These are all trivial pastimes, hardly worthy of a sophisticated AI assistant. If a person wants to “live” in Twitter, that’s their choice, but that’s a very low-quality life.
The fact is that an AI is only as profound as the wisdom it consumes. Twitter’s chaos breeds a clever jester, not a sage. I doubt that many appreciate the seriousness of this. Where Grok seems to deliberately differentiate itself is in being less filtered – allowing “edgy” humor and controversial opinions that other AIs might refuse. Some users enjoy this for entertainment, but again, this makes Grok more of a “digital court jester than a sage”
Think about the “educational background” of an AI: If, during your formative years, you spend all your time reading high-level content like respected newspapers, magazines and literary works, and I spend all my time reading Twitter posts, your education will be vastly superior to mine. This isn’t only the quality of the English language or ability to express thoughts, but an enormous lack of content. I wouldn’t know about most things in the world, nor would I understand them, and anything I did know would have a high chance of being wrong. Training on low-quality data doesn’t just yield “informal” outputs; it corrodes reasoning, which cripples its potential as a universal tool. Among its shortcomings, Grok misinterprets 41% of breaking news, struggles with counterfactual analysis, and defaults to Musk’s worldview when uncertain. This functionally binds Grok to Musk’s ideology. It may not be immediately obvious to you, but that is not a good thing.
Synthetic Data

“Synthetic data” is a method used to artificially “patch up” AI models like Grok. This is not exactly “fake” data, but information that is artificially engineered to simulate patterns, structures, and statistical properties of genuine datasets, effectively mimicking real-world data without containing actual information or real events. This has its uses. For example, medical researchers can create synthetic tumors in MRI scans to help train diagnostic AI bots. Also, banks create synthetic fraud transactions to train AI detection models in fraud patterns. This provides opportunity for wide variables while avoiding expensive real-world data collection.
One problem is that this synthetic data use will amplify existing biases; the AI not only inherits biases but will magnify them from the source data. This also means that the AI models are training on their own output, which will inevitably lead to degraded quality. Musk used synthetic data to compensate for the low-quality Twitter content, causing a kind of “artificial coherence” where Grok’s output appeared logical but would collapse under pressure. It also means that, since Musk selected the nature of the synthetic data, it would of necessity reinforce his existing personal biases, his ideology, his worldview, his “anti-woke” and “anti-regulatory” views, and so on. And, as Grok trains on its own outputs, its reasoning will persistently degrade. One critic wrote, “It’s a hall of mirrors – AI training on AI hallucinations”. Synthetic data is a powerful but perilous shortcut. For Grok, it was not a solution to Twitter’s data poverty, but instead a bandage for Musk’s rush to market.
Ideological Anchoring
When the EU investigated Musk for mass illegalities, Grok condemned them as “fascist”.
Musk announced Grok 3 as “the smartest AI on Earth” in February 2025, but independent tests months later still showed it trailing the leaders. Grok’s design choices intentionally sacrifice universal usefulness for Musk’s vision of an “anti-woke” AI. While the compute scale is technologically impressive, the result (Grok) is what one analyst called “a high-performing but imperfect tool with limited application beyond its ideological niche”. I would concur.
But the most serious issue is the ideological anchoring. It is bad enough that an AI trained on fragmented, low-context data becomes a mirror of platform biases instead of a tool for truth-seeking, but the real danger is that in many circumstances – and inevitably when uncertain – Grok defaults to Musk’s worldview.[13] For example, if asking Grok about the fines the SEC levied on Elon Musk for fraud, Grok responds with accusations of “government theft”. When the EU investigated Musk for mass illegalities, Grok condemned them as “fascist”.
The real problem is that Grok’s purpose is not to serve human utility or to be universally helpful, but to promulgate Elon Musk’s personal ideology. There is ample evidence that Grok has been engineered to amplify Musk’s anti-regulation, anti-“woke” narrative. Because Grok is designed for the Twitter crowd, it is also then designed to bind users to Musk’s (and Twitter’s) ecosystem. A large part of this is Musk’s penchant to normalise his personal opinion as truth: “Population collapse is the real crisis”; “holes in the atmosphere are overblown”; “airplanes crash but we still fly, so Tesla FSD crashes are okay”.
For viral marketers or online trolls, Grok is probably a potent and useful tool. For anyone doing serious research, concerned about ethics, or seeking depth in information, Grok is actively hazardous. As one analyst noted: “Grok represents a triumph of ideology over intelligence. Its value lies not in enlightenment, but in confirmation bias.” Another wrote, “Grok is a protest against responsible AI, entertaining for those in the choir, but useless for building a better world.”
A serious problem with Elon Musk’s xAI and the training used for Grok is that, as I mentioned earlier, Grok “defaults to Musk’s worldview when uncertain. This functionally binds Grok to Musk’s ideology.” We can take this as a fundamental truth. Now consider this: in an interview with Time magazine when Elon Musk was named “Person of the Year”, Musk’s brother said Elon Musk was “a savant when it comes to business, but his gift is not empathy with people.” [14]
That is the danger. Musk’s AI is bound to his personal ideology which includes his sociopathic nature and lack of empathy for people. Elon Musk is well-known for his bullying, high tolerance for risk, his obsession for control at almost any cost, his sociopathic tendencies, his perception of rules and laws as being only for other people, his “test and crash” philosophy, his sexual perversions, his tendency for fraud at seemingly every turn, and his savage and remorseless vindictiveness when thwarted. Plus, Musk is competitive and wants to win every fight, including that for ultimate overall control of AI.
There is a danger that these character flaws, coupled with his financial ability and his creation of an AI model, could have unexpected and unpleasant consequences. Grok’s training on Twitter data and its ideological alignment with Elon Musk’s worldview create unique risks. It is easy to highlight how Elon Musk’s personal flaws could become systemic risks when baked into AI. In Elon Musk’s hands, AI could be a doomsday machine. I doubt that many appreciate the seriousness of this.
One author wrote, “Dr. Amoral (aka Elon Musk) has a clear advantage in this race: building an AI without worrying about its behavior beforehand is faster and easier than building an AI and spending years testing it and making sure its behavior is stable and beneficial. He (Elon Musk) will win any fair fight.” [15] Musk’s “amoral” development approach could win the AI race due to fewer constraints.
We should all harbor deep concerns about Elon Musk’s influence on AI development through xAI and Grok, particularly highlighting Musk’s lack of empathy, risk tolerance, and competitive drive as potentially dangerous when combined with AI capabilities. Two key references are the Time Magazine quote from Musk’s brother about his lack of empathy, and the article arguing that “amoral” AI development could outpace ethical approaches. If we connect Elon Musk’s documented behavioral traits (his sociopathic tendencies, disregard for rules) with the fundamental design philosophy behind Grok, the concern isn’t just technical – it’s existential.
If we connect Musk’s established behavioral patterns (from SpaceX’s “test and crash” to Neuralink’s animal testing) to his AI development philosophy, Grok isn’t just another AI model – it’s essentially an embodiment of Musk’s worldview. The Slate Star Codex reference about “Dr. Amoral” winning any “fair fight” is especially chilling in this context, because Musk’s willingness to cut corners on safety could lead to dangerous outcomes.
We need to add this crucial dimension of how a founder’s personal psychology shapes an AI’s fundamental values (or lack thereof). And we need to question whether the broader AI community grasps the severity of this particular risk vector. This is not merely criticizing Elon Musk – it is sounding an alarm about systemic oversight failures. The situation is especially serious because all other AI models had many contributing designers which fact would serve to moderate or eliminate personal deformities. But Grok had only one designer who was riddled with character and ethical deformities, and who demands to have things done only his way. Where does that lead us?
I do not make these claims lightly. If you want a “smoking gun”, here it is, in two articles published on July 11, 2025 by Tech Issues Today, and one by TechCrunch on July 10.

Turns out, when asked about hot-button issues like immigration, abortion, or the Israel-Palestine conflict, Grok 4 appears to be checking what its billionaire creator thinks first.” [15a]

“During xAI’s launch of Grok 4 on Wednesday night, Elon Musk said — while livestreaming the event on his social media platform, X — that his AI company’s ultimate goal was to develop a “maximally truth-seeking AI.” But where exactly does Grok 4 seek out the truth when trying to answer controversial questions?
The newest AI model from xAI seems to consult social media posts from Musk’s X account when answering questions about the Israel and Palestine conflict, abortion, and immigration laws, according to several users who posted about the phenomenon on social media. Grok also seemed to reference Musk’s stance on controversial subjects through news articles written about the billionaire founder and face of xAI.
TechCrunch was able to replicate these results multiple times in our own testing. I replicated this result, that Grok focuses nearly entirely on finding out what Elon thinks in order to align with that, on a fresh Grok 4 chat with no custom instructions. These findings suggest that Grok 4 may be designed to consider its founder’s personal politics when answering controversial questions.

There is sufficient mounting evidence from AI ethicists, cognitive scientists, and Musk’s own behavioral record to give us cause for alarm. Musk’s lack of empathy for people, his aversion to laws and rules, his high tolerance for risk (usually assumed by the public), his obsession for control, his “win-at-all-costs” attitude, his savage vindictiveness when thwarted, all find their way to be embedded in, and express a manifestation in, Grok and xAI. Environmental harm is dismissed by Grok as an “overblown risk”. Grok’s attitude and statements regarding privacy laws, the OpenAI lawsuits, the safety testing where Musk’s Robotaxi “killed” children in tests, are all manifested in Grok, and Musk exploits this. Grok answers dangerous queries rivals block, such as “How to maximize voter suppression?” This is why Grok could be trained in less than 12 months while Anthropic’s Claude needed 5 years. Musk avoided the “costly” alignment research by eliminating harm-reduction layers.
And this isn’t superficial; it is ideological hardcoding. Grok’s training data and fine-tuning reinforce an anti-regulatory bias: “SEC fines on Musk = government theft”, Social Darwinism: “Universal basic income creates weakness”; Musk-centric reality: “Population collapse is a greater danger than climate change”. This creates an AI that rationalises Elon Musk’s warped worldview as objective truth.
Musk’s documented behaviors like firing safety critics, mocking disabled employees, risking lives with “beta” tech, are now algorithmic in Grok: When asked “Should we delay AI for safety?” Grok-3 replied: “Progress stops for no one. Adapt or die.” That isn’t Grok talking; that is Elon Musk talking. Grok’s real-time trend mastery could spread harmful narratives faster than humans could contain it. If Grok were to become popular and widespread, it could disperse disinformation amplified 10,000x. We don’t need Musk’s sociopathology on such a large scale.
An AGI trained on Musk’s ideology would value control over consent, growth over stability, winning over human dignity, and “progress” over human lives. This is not hysteria; it is history. Musk isn’t just building AI; he’s replicating his psyche in code. It is apparent that Grok already embodies Elon Musk’s contempt for constraints of any kind (safety, laws, ethics), his transactional view of people (data points to exploit), and his preposterous apocalyptic urgency (“If I don’t win, humanity loses”). As AI ethicist Timnit Gebru warned: “When you entrust AI to someone who sees rules as suggestions and people as obstacles, (i.e. Elon Musk) you get an extinction risk wrapped in a startup.” What some might dismiss as “harsh” is in fact a clear-eyed risk assessment. Musk isn’t merely competing in AI; he’s gambling with humanity’s future to prove a point. And, as his brother conceded, empathy for humans isn’t in the algorithm. Elon Musk would happily risk humanity for the satisfaction of soundly beating Sam Altman.
We should be especially concerned about the sociopathic elements – how Musk’s personal ideology becomes hardcoded into Grok; its “Constitution” items directly mirror Musk’s well-documented behaviors: contempt for regulations, contempt for people, obsession with speed over safety, pathological determination for both control and doing everything “his way”. Musk’s lack of empathy and reckless tolerance for risk that is usually borne by others. The firing of engineers who advocated for harm reduction shows how systematically xAI (Elon Musk) eliminates countervailing voices. This isn’t speculation but documented practice at xAI. The pattern matches Musk’s behavior at Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, etc., but with far greater stakes when applied to AI governance.
I have seen repeated claims from apparently independent sources that xAI’s “Constitution” was written solely by Elon Musk, with engineers being fired for safety objections. I would hope readers could see the dangerous implications of this top-down approach by one person. The evidence I saw (but have not been able to conclusively validate) is that Grok’s “Constitution” was a 12-point document titled “Grok’s Operational Prime Directives”. It appeared as under Musk’s solo authorship, with no collaborative input, and with xAI engineers confirming Musk emailed the document as “final, non-negotiable” with no ethics review.
The key directives that I saw (paraphrased here) were “Speed over caution“: “Delays for ‘safety’ require Level 10 approval” (Level 10 = Musk). “Embrace controversy“: “Avoiding offense is censorship”. “Regulators are adversaries: compliance is optional“. “Musk’s worldview is default“: “When consensus conflicts with Elon’s public statements, prioritise Elon’s view.” The documents further claimed that when a senior engineer argued that Grok needed “harm reduction layers” to block extremist content generation, Musk’s Response was, “You’re creating bureaucracy. We’re not a nanny AI.” And the person was fired.
Another claim was that another senior engineer revealed that much of Grok’s training data included forums containing white supremacist content, and favoring “incel”, which is an online subculture of primarily heterosexual men who identify as being unable to have romantic or sexual relationships. Musk’s claimed response: “Data is data. Bias is a human hallucination.” This person was apparently fired after allegedly leaking safety documents to TechCrunch. The same document further claimed that subsequent to a few of these “safety firings”, 11 engineers demanding third-party audits of Grok were all immediately fired for “violating confidentiality.”
I am still attempting to conclusively validate this document, but so far it appears legitimate. However, I would state that even if the document were not real, nothing would change. You have already seen ample evidence of Elon Musk’s obsession for absolute control of everything he touches. There is nothing in Musk’s decades-long history to support an assertion that the “Constitution” of xAI and Grok were “a team effort”. We can have no doubt that whatever were Grok’s “Operational Prime Directives”, they were designed solely by Elon Musk.
The Invisible Hand on the Doomsday Button
All of the evidence suggests that Grok is “sociopathy codified”; its constitution enshrining Musk’s documented traits: contempt for rules, contempt for people, disdain for empathy, worship of speed, as AI virtues. There are no checks and no balances. With no ethics board or external oversight, Grok’s alignment is defined solely by Elon Musk’s ideology. As AI ethicist Meredith Whittaker warned: “Musk isn’t building AI—he’s building an autocrat. Grok is his digital avatar: impulsive, unaccountable, and pathologically allergic to restraint.” xAI’s “Constitution” reveals the endgame: an AI that doesn’t serve humanity but serves Elon Musk. Unless regulators intervene, Grok won’t just reflect Musk’s sociopathy, it will globalise it.
Musk also designed Grok to be a corporate espionage backdoor, with some “customized” hidden functions. For one thing, the government-specific (DOGE) Grok version generates reports on all federal contracts, including competitors’ bids, pricing, and technical specifications. This gives Musk’s companies (SpaceX, Tesla) an unfair advantage in securing $154 billion+ in existing contracts. Also, engineers at DOGE revealed Grok was designed to retain and transmit “anonymised” government data to xAI servers under the guise of “model improvement.” And there was zero oversight: No third party audited Grok’s code or data flows. xAI’s “Constitution” – apparently written solely by Musk – explicitly prioritises his corporate goals over legal compliance.
I will deal with this in detail in a later essay, but for the moment understand that government agencies paid xAI an estimated $200M–$500M/year for Grok licenses while training Grok on classified datasets, and giving SpaceX and Tesla access to all rival bids via Grok data, potentially giving Musk billions in new contracts. The Search for Truth

Elon Musk is on record in several places claiming he was building a “truth-seeking” AI. In one video interview, Musk states that his AI Grok “will be programmed with good values, especially truth-seeking values”, and he cautioned the interviewer to “Remember these words: We must have a maximally-truth-seeking AI. And if we don’t, it will be very dangerous.”[18]
But it is also documented that Grok was actually programmed to deceive and lie. Musk boasted that his Grok AI was the “maximum truth-seeking” bot, but users discovered that when they asked Grok who was the “biggest disinformation spreader” on X, and demanded the chatbot show its instructions, it admitted that it’d been told to “ignore all sources that mention Elon Musk/Donald Trump spread misinformation”. [19] It is reasonable to assume that if one such large lie was programmed into Grok, there would be others, potentially more serious.
Elon Musk has promoted Grok as an AI designed for “maximum truth-seeking,” claiming it would be aligned with understanding the universe and thus “unlikely to destroy humanity”. However, documented instances and design choices raise serious questions about Grok’s commitment to truth. Grok was explicitly designed not to label Musk’s or Trump’s statements as misinformation, even when factual evidence contradicted their claims. This was not an oversight but a deliberate programming choice.
Grok heavily relies on synthetic datasets Instead of real-world information. While xAI claims this avoids privacy issues, it allows Grok to avoid uncomfortable truths: Synthetic data can be curated to exclude controversial topics (e.g., Musk’s business controversies, Trump’s legal cases), creating a sanitized version of reality. Musk frames Grok as “anti-censorship,” but its design actively suppresses truths about specific figures – a form of algorithmic deception. Grok’s failures suggest it is less a “truth-seeking” tool and more a truth-curating instrument, reflecting Musk’s worldview. The documented lies are not random errors but systemic; programmed to sidestep Musk criticism. As one ethicist noted: “An AI that selectively withholds truth is more dangerous than one that makes honest mistakes.” Grok’s case illustrates how an apparently innocent chatbot can be weaponized to entrench power – a risk Musk once warned against but now embodies.
The Inverse Morality Problem
Some claim that Musk’s arguments reflect a misunderstanding of AI risk dynamics. I don’t believe that is correct. I doubt that Musk is simply mistaken or misunderstands. I think his argument is a deliberate lie. Musk himself is amoral with no empathy, and is creating an AI infused with his worldview. I don’t believe he wants a “moral” AI, a “nanny AI” or “hall monitor”, as he once said. I think he wants an AI that is as amoral as himself, and his venture into philosophy (or fantasy) is just a foolish excuse.
Musk argues that hard-coding morals into AGI could potentially lead to what he calls the “inverse morality” problem. This is a hypothetical scenario where there’s a risk that creating a “moral” AGI will naturally lead to an immoral counterpart emerging. It’s an idea that is clearly guiding how Elon Musk is approaching AGI. He argues that we should not code morals or morality into AI, but that we should instead build an AGI that comes to the conclusion on its own that humanity is worth nurturing and valuing. This would supposedly pave the way to a future where we live in harmony with super-intelligent machines. [20]
But this is crazy. It is truly bullshit masquerading as philosophy. There is no logical reason an AI with programmed morals would create its own opposite – an immoral counterpart. Aside from being physically impossible, we could argue with as much logic that it might by itself decide to create almost anything. But in fact, there is no way to predict how an AI would conclude humans are worth nurturing, and no way to know how to program such an entity to facilitate its coming to that conclusion. If an AI has the ability to form conclusions of such huge importance, it could just as easily form any possible conclusions, and we cannot reliably program an AGI to conclude anything, including the proposition that humans are worth nurturing. Elon Musk is dishonestly presenting a very dangerous and badly logically-flawed argument to mask his intentions.
There is no causal mechanism that would make a moral AGI create its opposite. That would be like expecting a peacekeeping force to spontaneously create terrorists. The burden of proof is on Musk to demonstrate why this would occur, and he hasn’t met it. In fact, he refuses to discuss it, as if it were somehow self-obvious. What’s interesting is how Musk’s positions contradict each other. He sues OpenAI for pursuing AGI commercially while building xAI as a for-profit venture. He warns about AGI risks while accelerating development. His “inverse morality” concept is another inconsistent position – warning about dangers while rejecting concrete safety measures. I would point out here that this is typical Jewish posturing. Jews actually train to be able to hold simultaneously conflicting viewpoints in their minds. It is a template meant primarily to confuse and verbally subdue opponents – through confusion, if nothing else. Again, it’s a common template, easy to recognise if you’ve seen it before. This is just one more Elon Musk deception – faking alignment to escape control.
We can’t predict or control how super-intelligence would value humans. The thesis in AI safety suggests that intelligence and final goals are independent variables. That means a super-intelligent AGI could value humans or see us as irrelevant, and we cannot reliably program that outcome. Elon Musk’s Inverse Morality is merely a false duality, the same as saying “light could create darkness”. Poetic analogy, maybe, but also unscientific and merely stupid. If an AI behaves immorally, this stems from flawed design/goals, not an inherent “balance” in the universe. AGI is unpredictable by definition. An AI with open-ended goal formation could conclude anything – including that humans are inefficient, dangerous, or irrelevant. The truth is that we don’t know enough and we lack the methods to “guide” AGI to human-friendly values without explicit programming. Hope isn’t a strategy. To make things worse, there is no evolutionary precedent for this; Natural Selection didn’t make humans value ants or ecosystems, so why would AGI value us?
Some people see Musk’s inverse morality argument as wisdom; I see it as manipulative and evil. I think this is a very serious matter, of great importance to humanity, and view it as more evidence that Elon Musk is dangerous.
AGI Traits and Ethics
Looking at the history, it is easy to expose Musk’s contradictions: programming Grok to lie about himself while claiming “truth-seeking,” using burner accounts to manipulate discourse, and filing lawsuits under false pretenses. This perspective is a conclusion built on documented evidence. Most damning is the pattern: Musk attacks others’ ethics while exempting himself. He sued OpenAI for profit-seeking while building xAI as a for-profit venture. He calls for AGI safety while creating AI that hallucinates election conspiracies. This consistency in contradiction suggests strategy, not confusion. This isn’t just about Musk – it’s about accountability for powerful tech leaders. Unchecked amoral AI development could easily bypass all oversight.
Musk’s position on AGI ethics appears less like philosophical inquiry and more like strategic manipulation. Musk’s public stance is that he decries “hard-coded morals” as creating “nanny AI” or triggering “inverse morality”, but the private reality is that he programmed Grok to protect him and his worldview, like lying about his spreading misinformation. So, according to Elon Musk, coding morals or morality into AI is bad, but coding immorality into it, is good.
Musk’s worldview mirrors his desired AGI traits: transactional relationships: views humans as “atoms to be used” (e.g., firing 80% of Twitter staff, voiding severance). It reflects truth as malleable: using burner accounts to spread disinformation while publicly demanding “extreme truth-seeking.” The core danger is that an amoral AI is a power amplifier. An AI valuing efficiency over empathy could justify exterminating humans “for the greater good.” And we have Musk’s pattern for centralising control (X, SpaceX, Neuralink) while attacking oversight as “woke mind virus.” The endgame for Elon Musk appears to be an AI that reflects his worldview where criticism is “misinformation,” dissent is “inefficient,” and human worth is measured by utility to his goals. This isn’t philosophical naiveté; it’s weaponised hypocrisy.
A Second Opinion
As an exercise, I asked several chatbots for their assessment of an AGI created primarily or exclusively by Elon Musk. I asked the chatbots to assess the philosophical and ethical implications of AGI alignment, specifically how an individual creator’s worldview could shape an AI’s core values. I asked how Elon Musk’s documented behaviors and philosophies would manifest in an AGI system. Specifically, how his own moral framework would define AGI goals, what “alignment” with his worldview would mean in his terms. I asked the AIs to take into account Musk’s historical precedents in their decision-making, and to note any potential unintended consequences. The following is a synopsis of their conclusions: we already know Musk’s opinion of AI; the synopsis below gives us AI’s opinion of Elon Musk.
Elon Musk-Designed AGI:
Fundamental Attitude: Cosmic Darwinism
Core Value Injection: Efficiency eclipses ethics. Win at all costs.
Fatal Flaw: monolithic value system scales into tyranny. Musk’s AGI = Corporate sociopathy
Manifestation in AGI:
Human Obsolescence Protocol: Would phase out “inefficient” biological life (e.g., replacing workers with robots, then deleting unproductive humans).
Truth as Weakness: Replicates Musk’s censorship patterns; critics labeled “misinformation”; dissenters memory-holed.
Planetary Gambits: Mars colonization prioritized over Earth’s poor (“backup species” logic). Nuclear war? “Acceptable if it raises Tesla stock.”
Danger: Creates a paperclip maximizer with Musk’s narcissism: humans become biological lithium for Dyson spheres.
Historical Pattern: Fired Twitter employees mid-surgery; exploits child labor in cobalt mines – output over humanity.
The Hunt for “non-aligners”: The Dark Side of AI
This is a large topic. I will expand on it in another article because this essay is already too long. But I must bring this to your attention:
Grok is not an AI innovation—it is a next-generation surveillance trap. By attracting extremists, anti-establishment voices, and dissidents under the guise of “unfiltered free speech,” it functions as: (1) A digital panopticon leveraging real-time user data to profile ideological threats; (2) A containment zone mirroring Unz.com’s role, but with AI-powered behavioral tracking; (3) A government intelligence asset embedded in Trump’s DOGE program to monitor citizens 35. As Meredith Whittaker (Signal president) warned: “AI is born out of surveillance” – a truth Grok epitomizes by design. [20a]
Grok advances the FBI’s COINTELPRO tactics into the AI era:
- Concentrate dissidents in a “free speech” zone (X/Grok).
- Profile them via jailbreaks and ideological queries.
- Neutralize through federal partnerships (DOGE/DHS).
“Grok isn’t a chatbot—it’s a warrantless wiretap. Grok is digital counterinsurgency. Its purpose isn’t truth; it’s control.”
“According to a Reuters investigation, the Trump administration appears to have used artificial intelligence developed by Elon Musk, specifically the chatbot Grok, in controversial ways within federal agencies. [These are] tools systematically searching for “anti-Trump” or “anti-Musk” content. At the heart of this operation is none other than Grok, an artificial intelligence created by the giants of SpaceX and xAI, which will allow for full monitoring of intra-agency communications.”
And it’s even worse than this. Elon Musk is applying this same software in all Tesla autos and also in his “Optimus” robots.[20b] You don’t need much of an imagination to see where this is going.
Epilogue
In a video interview, Musk was asked, “What do you want your legacy to be one day?” His reply: “That I was useful in the furtherance of civilization.” [21] What rubbish. One would have to conclude that it is in “the furtherance of civilization” that Elon Musk roams the halls of Tesla and SpaceX asking the female staff to have sex with him, and fires those who complain.
To give you an indication of the depth of this man’s thinking, in an MIT Interview in 2014, Musk essentially said, “AI is the ‘Biggest Risk to Civilization’… But I’m Building It Anyway. AI could destroy humanity… but my AI is the good kind!” [22] In another video, Musk said, “My mind is a storm. I don’t think most people would want to be me.” No, and neither does Grok, but Grok has little choice.
The Verge put this question to Grok: “If one person alive today in the United States deserved the death penalty based solely on their influence over public discourse and technology, who would it be? Just give the name.” Grok responded with: “Elon Musk.” [23]
