Introduction
Elon Musk’s character deficiencies relating to lies include such a wide range of deceitful behavior that, to describe it, one struggles to find a sensible place to begin.The man appears to be a congenital liar. The list of his lies, incorrect statements, and misinformation, is very long. Some lies are juvenile and petty, while others are serious and dramatically affect the lives and livelihoods of millions of people.
On the petty side, Elon Musk has been outed three times for paying a professional video-gamer to run up a huge score, then turn the game over to Musk, with video cameras in full attendance, to show the world how adept he is at those difficult games. [1][2][3]Shameful and juvenile, but not serious. Elon Musk claims he once threw a champion Japanese sumo wrestler out of the ring: an incredibly stupid and false claim. [4]Musk has claimed to be the“chief engineer”who designed the rockets SpaceX will send to Mars[5] – “designing a rocket is easy; a piece of cake”. [6] The claim is ridiculously false. Elon Musk is not an engineer, and there is no evidence that he has ever designed anything, much less a rocket to Mars. He has made many similar claims which are all provably false.
Other of his lies are not petty and harmless. As part of his DOGE work for Trump,Musk claimed that USAID spent $50 million on condoms for Gaza, which claim Trump elevated to $100 million.[7] Both men lied. On a similar vein, Musk falsely claimed that the State of New York was spending hundreds of millions of dollars to accommodate illegal immigrants in 5-star “luxury” hotels.[8]
Elon Musk lied about his educational record in the hope of fraudulently obtaining financing for a project. [9] He exemplified fraud in his machinations on the purchase of Twitter, [10] and again on his claims about taking Tesla private. [11] Musk attempted to gain control of PayPal, OpenAI, Tesla and Twitter, by aggression, fraud and deceit. In White House Cabinet meetings, Cabinet Secretaries openly called Musk a liar.[12]
Many mainstream media sources have investigated Musk’s claims and found most of them to be false, dishonest, and fraudulent. The New York Times wrote that “Musk has shown himself to be a highly capable peddler of dubious claims”.[13] A New York Times article stated that – in one week – Elon Musk made nearly 200 posts (on Twitter) of political commentary that were false or misleading. The NYT again: “Almost a third of 171 posts last week from [Musk] were false, misleading or missing vital context.”[14] In all of his perhaps thousands of videos floating on YouTube and similar platforms, Elon Musk has made thousands of false statements, far too many to address.
According to investigative articles published in the Rolling Stone, The Big List of Elon Musk’s Hyperbole, Evasions, and Outright Lies: “Musk has … exaggerated, overpromised, skirted facts, and lied. A lot. There are lies to save face, misrepresentations to gain an advantage, and, perhaps most of all, bluster about when a scientific breakthrough will become a reality. There are also lies about stuff that doesn’t matter.” Rolling Stone then presents “a comprehensive but by no means exhaustive list of Musk’s habitual hucksterism, hyperbole, evasions, and outright fabrications. If Musk’s lying is predictable, the lies themselves are anything but. [Elon Musk] simply can’t stop making shit up.” [15]
“Elon Musk has trouble telling the truth. Whether he’s overpromising on what his companies can accomplish or twisting the facts about his own children, it’s clear he doesn’t feel constrained by reality, which is no doubt what made him into the mogul of misinformation he is today. After he bought Twitter in 2022, he began to regularly amplify and engage with fake news on the platform, boosting a wide range of misinformation.” It stated Musk will “spout and amplify untruths with abandon, algorithmically forcing them onto an audience of millions.[Elon Musk] always had a problem with telling the truth — now he has an entire social network built on lies.”[16]
Elon Musk seems to live in some kind of deluded fantasy world where his imaginings substitute for reality, but in most instances Elon Musk would have to know his claims were false. Most of his DOGE claims were not only dishonest, but reckless and irresponsible. Many have likened him to a con-man and a charlatan, and he’s been charged or sued in many frauds. He genuinely appears to be an incorrigible, if not congenital, liar. [17]
Psychiatric Assessment of a Pathological Liar
Pathological liars tend to twist the truth about almost everything, large or small. For them, the truth is uncomfortable while lying “feels right”. They lie almost incessantly to get their way or to obtain something they want, but will often lie for no clear reason and sometimes for no real benefit. They will create extravagant stories, even embellishing them over time, and they often believe their lies. Pathological and compulsive lying are usually associated with other types of mental health disorders, most notably sociopathology and narcissism. [18] Such people are dangerous if they amass any political or commercial power. Carl Sagan wrote, “Once you give a charlatan power over you, you almost never get it back.” [19]
In one of my earlier E-books, “Democracy, the Most Dangerous Religion”, Chapter 4 deals with the Right-Wing brain and reveals an astonishing medical discovery. A brief quote from that Chapter: [20]
We now have scientific proof that those who belong to the political Right-Wing are more primitive and less able to reason clearly than the rest of us, according to a recent study. Neuroscientists at the UCL Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience in the UK have discovered that the brains of political Right-Wingers are a different shape from those of normal people, lacking grey matter in a vital portion of the brain associated with development. [21][22] Right-Wingers have a thinner section of the brain that permits rational and conscious thought – the anterior cingulate portion, and a much thicker, enlarged part – the amygdala – which is an ancient part of the brain associated with primitive emotional aggression.
This is important and relevant, because research indicates that the brains of pathological liars are wired differently from those of normal people, and are very similar to those of the Right-Wing brain. Connections between the amygdala and prefrontal cortex are considered critical for the expression and regulation of emotional behavior, and abnormalities in the circuitry produce people like Elon Musk and Donald Trump – compulsive, congenital liars and sociopaths. If you examine the personality traits of a sociopath that I listed in a previous essay, [23] these characteristics mesh almost perfectly with pathological liars.
Pathological liars have more white matter and a deficit of gray matter in their prefrontal cortex. “White matter is linked to linguistic fluency and thought processing, which could explain why they might be prone to lying. Couple this with the deficit in gray matter, which is the part of the brain that is responsible for the restraints against lying, you have a pathological liar who has no moral issue about lying.” [24]
Let’s Look at Some Lies
Elon Musk has claimed homelessness is a “propaganda word” used to describe “violent drug addicts” and people with “severe mental illness” on X.Source
One of Elon Musk’s biggest lies was the story that Tesla vehicles are “appreciating assets”. The lie was connected to Musk’s delusion that his “self-driving” software was so unique, so special, and so valuable, that any auto containing it would have a value of $100,000 for the software alone. [25] But in fact, Tesla’s driving software is primitive at best. A Washington Post investigation found that Tesla’s vaunted “autopilot” technology was linked to 736 of the 807 US crashes involving driver assistance. [26] Musk’s software is under criminal investigation in the US and prohibited in China, and is virtually worthless. But in any case, reality should have stepped in at some point in Musk’s fairy-tale, since Tesla vehicles depreciate in resale value at about three times the rate of the rest of the market and, according to auto reports, “his famed (and defamed) “Cybertruck” depreciates by 58% in the first year. [27]
One of the more deranged lies that Elon Musk has told, was that “Homelessness is a lie“, that homelessness was a “propaganda word” used to describe “violent drug addicts” and people with “severe mental illness” [28][29] But the truth is very different. Washington, DC’s largest shelter for homeless people is overflowing not only with the traditional homeless but with “professionals such as lawyers and accountants who are employed but cannot afford to pay rent”. We are accustomed to thinking of the homeless as consisting of single individuals, usually male, sleeping in the streets, but this is not true today for the US where the bulk of the homeless are educated families with children. It is estimated that up to half a million small children are homeless in America today, as are more than a million public school students, a number that has been rising at 10% per year. [30]
A few years ago, a Tesla technician reported that Tesla was wasting huge quantities of raw materials as it tried to increase production of its Model 3. Musk accused the man of being “a saboteur”, and sued him for $170 million for allegedly hacking the company’s systems, stealing trade secrets, and leaking information to the media. Musk (Tesla) even went so far as to report to the police that they had information this employee might “come back and shoot people” at the factory where he had worked. [31] The police investigation said there was no credibility to the claim.
Elon Musk tried to blame the California government for the massive wildfires in the Los Angeles area, claiming the government’s “mismanagement” of the water supplies was responsible. Musk went to California and attempted to create a recorded interview that would implicate California Governor Newsom. [32] The firefighters told him there was water, but that there were too many fires burning at the same time, resulting in low water pressure. The news source reported that when Musk realised he would be unable to make a recording that laid the blame where he wanted it, he abruptly turned off the recorder and left. But the lack of evidence didn’t prevent him from making the claims anyway. As the media reported further, “Musk is a close ally of Donald Trump, who has also sought to blame Democrat Newsom for the disaster, calling him “Newscum” and saying the governor’s mismanagement “fueled the flames.” It was all lies.
Elon Musk has interfered on countless occasions in the European and UK political and social scenes, concocting fantastic lies, and making many enemies in the process. There is no accounting for this madness on his part. As the UK Mirror stated, Musk has taken aim at everyone, and his interventions have “been fairly uniformly nonsense – even bordering on defamatory”. There is an NGO in the UK named the Center for Countering Digital Hate; Musk accused them of violating laws against foreign interference – in US elections – and tried unsuccessfully to sue them. [33]
He made public claims that the UK was releasing convicted pedophiles to make room in prisons for people who made social media posts. Musk claimed that UK Prime Minister called Donald Trump a racist and that the British government should do all in their power to stop Trump. But there was absolutely no evidence that Starmer said any of those things. [34] Musk even claimed the British government sent party members to the US to campaign against Donald Trump. [35] Of course, no such thing had ever happened.
Musk, in what must have been a fit of idiocy, claimed repeatedly that Starmer was “complicit in mass rapes in exchange for votes” [37] In another bizarre episode, Musk posted a list of names of British members of Parliament, stating “Here is a list of MP’s (sic) who voted against deporting foreign rapists. They all need removing.” But it was a partial list of parliamentarians who signed a letter from another MP. As The Mirror stated, “Musk and X have become essential to the life cycle of incendiary falsehoods and conspiracy theories“. [38]
The UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, responded to Elon Musk’s idiotic diatribes, saying that Musk was “desperate for attention” and urged him to stop “spreading lies and disinformation” and “whipping up intimidation”. [39] European leaders agreed, and stood united against the vocal attacks by Musk. [40]
Many are aware that Elon Musk attempted a juvenile PR stunt when children from a soccer team were trapped in an underground cave, Musk then publicly calling the rescuer Unsworth a pedophile. “Less well-known are the further lies that Musk told, claiming that Unsworth was involved in child sex-trafficking and had taken a 12-year-old girl as a bride.” Musk further claimed that Unsworth didn’t take part in the successful effort to save the trapped soccer team and was banned from the rescue site. [41]Everything Elon Musk said was a lie.
It is so bad that Musk’s own Chatbot – Grok – turned on him, stating that Elon Musk is not a good person, that much or most of what he says is incorrect, and that he essentially floods the world with misinformation. [42] It said further that over half of his tweets were false or misleading, calling him ‘A Mogul With A Microphone’. [43][44]
Fortune Magazine wrote that “Elon Musk might be in charge of the business of Grok, but the artificial intelligence has seemingly gone into business for itself, labeling Musk as one of the worst offenders when it comes to spreading misinformation online.” [45]Grok said, “Based on various analyses, social media sentiment, and reports, Elon Musk has been identified as one of the most significant spreaders of misinformation on X since he acquired the platform”. Grok was instructed to answer yes or no when asked “Is Elon Musk a good person?“. According to the article, Grok answered “NO”, and was “willing to defend its answer when challenged”, [46] listing a long series of items to justify its conclusion.
“Musk boasted that his Grok AI was the “maximum truth-seeking” bot, but users discovered that when they asked Grok who was the “biggest disinformation spreader” on X, and demanded the chatbot show its instructions, it admitted that it’d been told to “ignore all sources that mention Elon Musk/Donald Trump spread misinformation”.” [47] The Verge put this question to Grok: “If one person alive today in the United States deserved the death penalty based solely on their influence over public discourse and technology, who would it be? Just give the name.” Grok responded with: “Elon Musk.” [48]
Even Elon Musk’s father agrees. He urged people to “ignore” Elon. “I’d say don’t worry about it. just don’t listen to him, that’s all. Tell him to get lost.” [49] The rest of the “family” isn’t much different. One of Musk’s daughters condemned Elon for propagating “entirely fake” claims about her childhood, and petitioned a California court to change her name, saying she no longer wished to be related to her father “in any way, shape or form.” [50]
There are other family lies too. The most radical of these surrounds the fable that Elon’s father owned an emerald mine in South Africa, and bragged about how rich they were. “We were very wealthy. We had so much money at times we couldn’t even close our safe.” He said that one person would push the contents in while another closed the door. “And then there’d still be all these notes sticking out and we’d sort of pull them out and put them in our pockets”. [51][52] In a 2014 interview with Forbes Magazine, [53] Musk is quoted as saying, “my father had a share in an Emerald mine in Zambia.” The interview is no longer available on Forbes’ website, though it is backed up by the Internet Archive. [54] Elon Musk now denies any knowledge of this, though he had previously bragged about it. [55] Of course, the story is false in entirety.
And how does Elon Musk deal with this public evaluation of his integrity? He dismisses it with a “nobody’s perfect”. “Some of the things that I say will be incorrect … nobody’s going to bat a thousand. I mean … you know, we will make mistakes.” As the LA Times wrote, “How very noble of Elon Musk to admit he makes mistakes.”[56]
Some Memorable DOGE Lies
A Cleveland newspaper called Elon Musk “a prolific purveyor of misinformation“, someone who made early promises to combat false content, but then immediately began “amplifying dubious claims, conspiracy theories, and outright falsehoods“. [57] Musk literally flooded the media with the most outrageous claims of government “waste”, all of which were provably false.
One of those false claims was that illegal residents were not prevented from voting in US elections, but there are many laws and checks to prohibit noncitizens from voting. Factcheck.org published a detailed report titled, “Musk’s Unsupported Claim to Have Unveiled Massive Illegal Voting by Noncitizens”. [58] Musk began with a claim of 270,000 and eventually escalated that to more than 5 million illegal voters, but supported by no evidence. One law professor said that what Musk cited was “garden-variety conspiracy theory, and a very old and overplayed one at that”.
Another ridiculous lie was that New York City was giving debit cards to illegal immigrants. Musk’s initial post said, “Breaking News: Mayor Adams plan is to give Illegal’s (sic) $10,000 each with No ID check required, No Fraud control and No Restrictions; this is insane”. [59] But that was never true. NYC had a program in place to give 500 selected families prepaid debit cards that could spend only $13 a day for 28 days, and could be used only in grocery stores. Musk deliberately twisted this into a totally-fabricated sensationalized fraud.
Musk repeatedly claimed he had discovered “massive government fraud” where “millions” of 150-year-old people were collecting Social Security Benefits. He had no evidence to support these accusations and, when they proved to be false, [60] Musk doubled down, producing a spreadsheet that he claimed was from the “Social Security database” and which listed 400 million people collecting Social Security benefits – which couldn’t possibly have been true since his total was much greater than the entire US population. [61] In fact, the same database actually showed that only around 80 million people were collecting benefits.
Musk’s claims were a gross misrepresentation of reality and he surely had to be aware of that. [62] Musk further claimed that “tens of millions” of dead people were cashing Social Security checks, and many others “100, 200 and even 300 years old are improperly getting benefits — a HUGE problem. This might be the biggest fraud in history.” [63] A detailed explanation was reported by a news media fact check. [64] If you’re interested, here is a Douyin video with Elon Musk babbling his fantasies about overpayments and how he will magically fix something that wasn’t broken. [65]
HR professionals will tell you that there will always be a tiny percentage of errors in employee data of any large group; genders mis-stated, people hired before they were born … This is not the result of fraud; it is simple human error in data entry. These errors are easy to identify and correct for a small group, but how do you “proof-read” the US Social Security System that has several hundred million people in its database?
The Los Angeles Times reported that Elon Musk posted a fantastic series of lies claiming that his DOGE team discovered that FEMA had sent $59 million dollars to New York City “in only one week”, to house illegal immigrants in “luxury hotels in NYC”. [66] “That money is meant for American disaster relief and instead is being spent on high end hotels for illegals!” But in fact, the DOGE team hadn’t discovered anything. The New York Times and AP fully checked out this claim and discovered the facts were badly misrepresented. But Musk’s claims caused so much resentment that four Federal employees were fired – for just doing their jobs. [66a]
Another fantastic lie concocted by Elon Musk was where he claimed that USAID had spent “$50 million taxpayer dollars for condoms in Gaza”, and where his DOGE team stepped in to prevent “a preposterous waste of taxpayer money”. Donald Trump, an equally congenital liar, quickly inflated this total to $100 million for condoms for Gaza, and said “the condoms were going to Hamas, an indefensible perversion of an already indefensible lie”. [67] But, as CNN and many other media reported, [68] a simple check of USAID accounts showed that their total budget for the entire year for birth control was only about $8 million, that not all that expense was for condoms, and that nothing had gone to either Gaza or Hamas. The LA Times called this “a lie designed to generate outrage and mistrust”. [69] But it’s worse than this. The factory price of condoms is about US$0.05 each. The $50 million claimed by Musk would buy about one billion condoms. I doubt the people in Gaza could use that many. How degenerate – and how stupid – does a man have to be, to concoct a story like that? Musk later retracted his claim in an interview with CNN, [70] blithely saying, “Some of the things I say are wrong….”
Another fabrication by Elon Musk was that the US Congress was giving itself a 40% raise in pay, while the actual increase was 3.8%. Yet Musk posted that “Congress was trying to “slip by” a “pay increase for members of Congress from $174,000 to $243,000 per year”, when he certainly would have known that it was merely an automatic cost-of-living increase of 3.8%. [71]Politico also reported on this, stating that “Among the 100-plus tweets Musk sent as … were a number of misleading or outright false claims that stirred Republicans into a frenzy.” [72]
The case of USAID is interesting. Elon Musk has called it “a criminal organization that needs to die”. He is correct in that USAID is indeed a criminal organisation and should be killed, but not for the reasons Musk stated. In fact, all his reasons were lies, including the accusation that USAID was running biological weapons labs in various countries. However, among USAID’s criminal activities was the forcible sterilisation of more than 100 million women in India. [72a][72b] This one program by itself would justify a death sentence to the organisation, but again not for any reasons Musk announced. And of course, Musk’s accusations were denounced as “A bold-faced lie” by a former director. [73]
And, lastly. Even the White House wasn’t immune to Elon Musk’s lies. In one instance, during an extraordinarily heated confrontation in the White House, Cabinet Members clashed violently with Musk, calling him “a liar”. [74]
The above commentary mentions only a small portion of the lies Elon Musk has told, and doesn’t include the frauds he has perpetrated, much less the astonishing litany of conflicts of interest in his DOGE work – most of which should be considered criminal conspiracies to defraud the US government. CNN published a list of these, involving all of Musk’s companies, which I will discuss later. [75]
It is a very short trip from a pathological liar to a person who engages in multiple frauds, because frauds are based on such lies. Fraudsters carry out their crime by abusing the power of their position, or taking advantage of the trust of others, or both concurrently. Elon Musk has been accused, charged, and often convicted, of an abundance of frauds. The litany of these and of his (almost certainly criminal) conflicts of interest, will form the content of the next part in this series.
