Chances are that the cosmos neither treasures nor regrets humans. It permits us, with marvellous neutrality, and could do without our interference

In a Scandinavian hotel a few years ago, I came across a documentary I didn’t expect to watch for more than a minute or two, but at least it was in English. It was past time to go to bed, but I ended up watching the whole thing. Aftermath: Population Zero imagines that overnight humanity vanishes from the planet.
You may have seen it. The immediate effects of human departure are sentimentally saddening: pets die, no longer competent to fend for themselves. Some livestock fares poorly, though other domesticated animals romp happily into the wild. Water cooling fuel rods of nuclear power plants evaporate, and you’d think that would be the end of everything – but it isn’t.
Radioactivity subsides. Mankind’s monuments to itself decay, until every last skyscraper has rusted and returned to dirt. Animals proliferate, flora thrive, forests rise. Bounty, abundance and beauty abound. Antelopes leap from wafting golden grasses. It was all very exhilarating, really. I went to sleep that night with a lightened heart.
Ever since, that wafting grasses image has been a comforting touchstone. We speak often of “destroying the planet” when what we mean is destroying its habitability for humans. The humblingly immense else-ness of what is, in which our species is collectively a speck, extant for an eye blink, lets us off the hook. Global warming, Syrian civil war, domestic violence, Donald Trump? This too shall pass.
I’m not a religious person. Chances are that the universe neither treasures nor regrets us. It permits us, with a marvellous neutrality, and later it may permit artificial intelligence, humanity 2.0, or a lot more bugs instead. We can’t comprehend all that phantasmagorical stuff out there, but we also can’t kill it. That gives me hope. Although we’re a remarkably successful biological manifestation – and so is mould – our aptitude for annihilation is largely limited to wiping ourselves out. The gift of self-destruction is a minor, not to mention stupid, power, and apparently humanity’s suicide would be relatively safe, like a controlled explosion. The universe would get on perfectly well without us once we’d gone.
I strongly associate the notion of aftermath with TC Boyle’s short story Chicxulub. While relating the intimate, personal account of learning that his teenage daughter has been hit, perhaps fatally, by a car, the narrator digresses to explain the shockingly high likelihood that our planet will be hit by an asteroid large enough to extinguish our species. For the narrator, his daughter’s death and the end of the world are indistinguishable. The text is shot through with a piercing sorrow, over all our pending losses – of children, of the world we’ve made together as a race. This, too, gives me hope – that I’m not a misanthrope after all. I would miss my brother, my husband; with all our shortcomings, I would also miss the family of man. The capacity for grief, the flipside of love, consoles me as much as the detached long view of aftermath.

President Obama likes to pretend that he’s a sort of a moral leader. In his head he must be the champion of decency and good grace, a man pointing America toward a broader vision, a fellow questing for social justice and contextual consideration. In reality, he’s narcissistic and stupid. Obama’s legacy is one of failure all around the world. He leaves office with a genocide in Syria on his record. Libya, meanwhile, remains a full-scale disaster area.
This honest position has recently been expressed by the US media source known as Townhall. It notes that Obama came into office amidst grand promises to restore America’s place in the world. Нe’s failed. But at least he feels good about his accomplishments, even if hundreds of thousands have died in order to ensure his moral stature in his own mind.
What’s funny, it’s after the disastrous two terms in office, America’s Lame duck is still committed to empty attempts to damage US-Russian relations even further. This time around the White House introduced new sanctions against Russia for its alleged involvement in rigging the US presidential election. Additionally, a total of 35 Russian diplomats have been declared persona non grata, therefore, they are to be deported from the US in 72 hours after the declaration. At the same time, two diplomatic compounds in New York and Maryland are to be closed.
Frankly speaking, the world grew tired of the constant steam of lies unleashed by the sitting administration, and the delusional and groundless accusations of Russia using its hackers to somehow affect the situation in Washington. For the first time, stories about alleged involvement of Russian hackers in the internal affairs of the United States started appearing in the Western corporate media around six months ago. Back then they were used by the Obama administration to assist Hillary Clinton with her presidential campaign. When Hillary lost, the White House used to further damage US-Russian bilateral relations, even though no evidence has ever been presented to the media to back up the claim that Russians are in any way connected to the hacker attack. But everything that is hidden will one day be revealed.

[Editor’s note: Veterans Today even played its part. When confronted by evidence of electoral interference at every level, just like the CIA does to other countries, this time “payback” for the US, we knew that the truth would never get out. We tried telling the Clinton campaign that the FBI and Israel were rigging the election, working hand in hand with fake news, voter suppression and sophisticated “erasable” hacking.
What they all wanted was to blame Russia, the traditional “boogeyman.” This is why evidence is so thin, against Russia at least. The evidence against Wikileaks, Israel and traitors in the US is massive but all are under FBI protection and there is no other body that can protect the United States. Congress and the Supreme Court fell under the control of the elements that rigged this election long ago, something carefully documented by VT time and time again.
The evidence was overwhelming and it would have produced a massive amount of quality intelligence. We had worked with the CIA on social media monitoring and analysis intelligence, some of us at least, in the Gulf, and we knew that Facebook was onboard, coordinating rumors and smears.
Other efforts must have left the trail for others that we quickly found, straight to Tel Aviv, tied to a Netanyahu grudge and his obsession with destroying Iran and ethnically cleansing the Palestinian people, to hideous acts of criminality now deep in planning between the Trump and Likudist camps.
What will or at least “should” hang them all is the trail left by Wikileaks. The Russians, out of desperation, let Assange into Russia Today, with other recognized foreign intelligence assets, a penetration of both Sputnik News and RT. Press TV in Iran had gone through a similar process but Revolutionary Guards purged that publication and returned it to its previous level of prominence and quality.
For those unaware, if such a thing is possible, America’s efforts to undermine and control the press have long been turned on America herself through penetration of the BBG, the shadowy Broadcast Board of Governors and their equally shadowy relationship with the CIA’s black propaganda mechanisms.
